The Curator’s Perspective
Kippei (吉平) opened in 2025 in the heart of Tsukiji, brought to life by a chef who honed his craft at the renowned Tonkatsu Aoki, using the prized Hayashi SPF (Specific Pathogen Free) pork — the same breed championed by Aoki — to deliver a refined yet approachable lunch experience. This is a place for those who appreciate the quiet mastery behind a perfect Tonkatsu.
Location & Exterior
Kippei is located on the ground floor of a distinctive square building at the Tsukiji intersection. While it sits right in the heart of the area, it remains a quiet spot favored by locals and has yet to be widely discovered by the international crowds that fill the nearby streets.

Interior & Seating
Inside, Kippei is compact and intimate — just six counter seats. The limited capacity means the restaurant fills up quickly, and a queue can form as early as 11:00 AM on weekends. To avoid a long wait, arriving just before opening is the best strategy. A reservation list is set up outside, so you can add your name and wait nearby.
Menu
The menu at Kippei is focused and straightforward, centered on premium Tonkatsu (pork cutlets). Please note that rice and miso soup are ordered separately from the main dish, allowing you to customize your meal. However, since tonkatsu and white rice are a perfect match, I highly recommend at least ordering a side of rice to fully enjoy the experience.

What to Order (Curator’s Pick)
In Japanese Tonkatsu culture, the Pork Loin (Rosu) is considered the standard choice for the ultimate balance of flavor and texture. It features a perfect duality of rich, sweet fat (umami) and tender lean meat. While the 150g portion is a satisfying baseline, you can choose the size that best fits your appetite. If it’s your first time experiencing high-quality Tonkatsu, start with the Loin to truly understand why this cut is the gold standard in Japan.

The breading is light and crispy, providing a great texture. Even the thicker parts of the meat are impressively tender and easy to bite through. The fat is well-balanced—rich in flavor but not overly heavy—making it easy to enjoy the entire meal without feeling weighed down.

Various salts are provided on the counter, inviting you to explore different flavor combinations with each bite.
