The Curator’s Perspective

Nestled in the basement of a nondescript building near the Tsukiji Market intersection, “Toto Grill” (東都グリル) is far from your typical tourist-oriented eatery. Since its establishment in 1963, it has served as the “unseen kitchen” for market professionals. Entering this space feels like stepping back into the Showa era—a genuine, no-frills sanctuary where the quality of the food speaks louder than the decor. It is a place for those who seek the true soul of Tsukiji, away from the glittering main streets.

Location & Exterior

The restaurant is located in the basement of the “Tsukiji 6-chome Building,” situated along Harumi-dori. While the street-level entrance is subtle, look for the retro food sample display case at the top of the stairs. Its close proximity to the market makes it a strategic spot for a hearty breakfast or lunch. Despite being underground, the interior is surprisingly spacious, often filled with the lively energy of local regulars.

Look for the sign as your landmark. The restaurant is located on the basement floor (B1F).

Menu

Toto Grill offers an extensive “Shokudo” style menu that caters to all cravings. From ultra-fresh seafood bowls (Sashimi-teishoku) to nostalgic Japanese-Western dishes like Curry and Omelet Rice, the variety is staggering. The blackboard on the wall lists daily specials that feature the best catches of the morning, a testament to the restaurant’s deep ties with the neighboring market.

What to Order (Curator’s Pick)

While individual dishes are great, the true value lies in the Teishoku (Set Meal) format. Beyond the main dish like Maguro or Fried Scallops, each set comes with a variety of side dishes, rice, and authentic miso soup. This allows you to experience a well-balanced, traditional Japanese meal with a diverse range of flavors and textures in a single sitting—making it a far more satisfying and holistic experience than just ordering a single item.

Hearty and satisfying !
